Fluffy is back and funnier than ever
Gabriel Iglesias spreads joy with his standup special ‘Aloha Fluffy’
November 16, 2016
My current occupation is a janitor for various businesses throughout Wayne. While I’m at work, I’m allowed to listen to music or movies on my phone, as long as I have headphones and I do so quietly so as not to disturb employees.
I made the mistake of listening to Gabriel Iglesias’s standup special “Aloha Fluffy” while at work. For anyone not familiar with Iglesias, he’s a Hispanic comedian known for making jokes about his weight and eating habits, as well as doing a variety of voices and impersonations.
Let me just preface this by saying that I love to laugh. It’s the best therapy in the world, plus it’s free. Where is the downside? Hint: there is none.
It’s been a long time since I listened to an Iglesias show, four years to be exact, so I wasn’t sure what to really expect. A comedian’s style can change a lot in just a few months, so imagine all the changes possible in several years.
The mistake was choosing that special, as it was honestly hilarious and I caught myself laughing a little too loudly on multiple occasions.
“Aloha Fluffy” started out with some jokes about Iglesias’s time on the islands of Hawaii (where the special takes place), then into some of his travel stories from his tour (including a stop in Saudi Arabia where he met a prince), some anecdotes about his family (which is one of his more popular topics) and finally a reprise of one of his most popular jokes about a gift basket practical joke.
There’s nothing I love more than self-deprecating humor, and that’s the one thing about Iglesias’s comedic style that hasn’t changed since I last watched his standup. He’s not afraid to make fun of himself for an entire show, and poke fun at his family and friends.
After getting dirty looks from call center employees and taking a minute to compose myself, I searched the internet for every stand up special of his and watched them all from Friday to Sunday while playing The Sims and eating pizza. Honestly, best decision of my life so far.
If you’ve never seen a Gabriel Iglesias show, I urge you to do so as soon as possible. Two of his comedy specials are on Netflix, and I highly recommend everyone watch them. But, not before you watch “Aloha Fluffy.” It’s one of the best standup specials I’ve seen in a long time and it is easily one of the most mood boosting comedic shows I’ve seen in a long time.
