Plains Writers Series

WSC Press is proud to present The Plains Writer’s Series tomorrow from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Humanities Lounge. This event has been put on four times a year by the WSC Press since 1977 in an effort to showcase local and Great Plains authors and artists.

“This reading series generally features Great Plains area authors and artists in a one-or two-day event open and free to the public,” WSC Press manager Chad Christensen said. “Our goal for the series is to provide a forum for Nebraska contemporary writers and poets to share their work with Nebraska readers.”

Tomorrow’s installment will showcase authors David Wyatt, Greg Kosmicki, Erik Campbell and William Trowbridge. The event allows students to hear firsthand what it’s like to be an author, and also what it takes to be one.

“It’s encouraging to meet writers, especially regional writers,” Christensen said. “They may not be financially supporting themselves by just being a writer, but I think it allows them to see how other writers have done it and encourages their own work.”

This year’s event looks to serve not only as a talk with the authors, but as a book release too. Two of the authors presenting at the series, Wyatt and Kosmicki, are set to have books published by the WSC Press. The books are “Gathering Place” by Wyatt and “It’s As Good Here As It Gets Anywhere” by Kosmicki.

Along with The Plains Writers Series during the day, later in the evening students who are interested will have the opportunity to present their own material to the authors at the 36th annual poetry slam held at the Max Bar and Grill in Wayne.

“The poetry slams started back at Riley’s Pub, before it moved to The Max because it was still fairly small,” Christensen said. “Ideally what I’ve said when we bring in authors is, ‘it’s an ongoing tradition that when we bring you in to read during the day at the Plain Writers Series that you judge the poetry or fiction slam in the evening.’”

The second Plains Writers Series of the semester will take place Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. in The Humanities lounge. Writers will include Tom Paine, Liz Kay, and Teri Grimm. Questions regarding the events can be answered by contacting WSC Press at [email protected] or 402-375-7118.
