Life Behind the Mask
October 12, 2016
Last week, WSC senior Ariana Castañón presented Life Behind the Mask: Danza de Los Tlacololeros in Gardner Hall 108.
Castañón is the vice president of Latinos Uniting, an executive member of the Multicultural Club and a delegate for Student Senate.
Her presentation was about a community in Chichihualco, Guerrero, in southwestern Mexico, and its holiday, Danza de los Tlacololeros. It is an ancient holiday that involves colorful masks and parades and is carried on in Schuyler.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” WSC senior and Latinos Uniting member Henry Ventura said. “I thought it was interesting how some traditions carry on, even now in a town like Schuyler. I wasn’t aware of things of that sort being so popular.”
Many found the topic fascinating, like Derek Torres, WSC senior.
“It was pretty informative and a nice peek at someone else’s cultural history,” Torres said. “The masks were artistically intriguing. Honestly, I’d like to know how much work they put into making them.”
This presentation was a part of Hispanic Heritage Month at WSC. It is commemorated nationally by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
