Wayne State woman’s soccer team continued conference play this past weekend, visiting Minnesota State University- Mankato Friday, where they fell 0-4 and facing off against Concordia St. Paul Sunday at home, where they tied and clinched their 5th straight shutout of the season for third best in the NSIC. Wildcats are now 6-3-3.

WSC got the weekend started by facing off against Mankato Friday. Mankato got on the board early at the 7:31 mark in the first half, then again in the 22nd and 26th minute to take a 3-0 lead at intermission.

The Mavericks got on the board at the 63:14 mark of the second half to take a 4-0 lead to close out the game.

“Part of how we played had a lot to do with the pressure they put us under.  We will move on quickly and get ready for Concordia-St. Paul Sunday,” Head Coach Bruce Erickson said.

Wayne State had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks with Minnesota State being fouled for offside seven times in the contest. MSU was called for seven fouls to just two on WSC.

Wayne State and Concordia-St. Paul played to a 0-0 tie in double overtime in the Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer Sunday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Pitch.

Concordia-St. Paul out-shot Wayne State in the first half 7-4 and 12-6 in the second half. Both teams had nine corner kicks while the Golden Bears were credited with 14 fouls and seven on the Wildcats.

Senior Valerie Hernandez added three shots with one on goal. Sophomore Samantha Philips led WSC with three shots total, with two on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Kylie Comba was credited with eight saves in the contest.

“The team played really hard on Friday but unfortunately things didn’t go our way,” Kelsey Engstrom said. “We decided as a team we weren’t going to lose on our home field this season, so we dug deep and played 110 minutes and came out with a good result.”

Wayne State will be at home again next weekend hosting Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Bemidji State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
