Wayne State women’s rugby kept their undefeated season alive Saturday night with a 74-0 dismantling of Sioux Falls. This is the women’s second win over the Cougars this year after beating them earlier in the season at the Rookie Rumble tournament in Wayne.

“Today we played really well,” Wayne State rugby player Kelsa Mills said. “We are really starting to work together and come together as a team.”

In the game, the Wildcats asserted their dominance from the start, marching down the field and scoring on the first several possessions of the game.

“As a team, we all played good, and we’re able to use each other’s talent’s to put out a solid performance all around,” Mills said.

Throughout the rest of the game, Wayne State women rugby used a combination of loose running and solid backline play to power themselves to the 74-0 shutout.

“Scrum played better, and did a much better job at running a loose play,” Wayne State Rugby Coach Darrin Barner said. “Backline played good as well, probably best back line in the United States.”

The men’s rugby team’s game scheduled for this Saturday against South Dakota was canceled due to South Dakota not having enough players to play. The game has been rescheduled to Oct. 22 at South Dakota.

Homecoming this Saturday, Wayne State men and women rugby teams are at home against Nebraska and Creighton. The women start the action off with a game against Nebraska, followed by the men vs Creighton.

“Looking forward to a good game between our men and Creighton,” Barner said. “Creighton is a solid team, as they beat a very good Nebraska squad a year ago.”

The games will take place at Wayne State College Rugby Complex, which is three blocks south of McDonalds on East 4th Street.
