The Wayne State Wildcat football team fell to 0-3 after a tough game against the 24th ranked Bemidji State Beavers, 45-17. The Beavers improve to 3-0 on the season.

“We just weren’t able to get enough done on offense to make a difference in the game,” Wildcat Head Coach Dan McLaughlin said. “We have to work on that, and we’re hopefully going to have a good week of practice to fix that.”

The Beavers had a strong start to the game, scoring on four of the first five times they possessed the ball. Isaac Aanerud kicked a 37-yard field goal to give the Beavers the first lead of the game 3-0 with 10:39 left to play in the first quarter.

Beavers quarterback Jordan Hein then threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brady Schmidt, giving them a 10-0 lead with 6:39 remaining.

Minot jumped out to a quick 24-0 lead in the second quarter.

BSU capped off the first quarter with a pick-six by Damon Benham off. Zach Osborn and took it 19-yards to the end zone. The score at the end of the first quarter was 17-0, Beavers.

The Beavers picked up right where they left off to begin the second quarter. Hein threw his second touchdown of the game to Blake Holder, which gave BSU a 24-0 lead with 11:02 left in the second quarter.

WSC finally got on the board when sophomore tight end Keaton Slaughter caught a three-yard pass from Osborn to cut the lead to 24-7. Bemidji State responded in just over three minutes, capping off a 77-yard drive as Hein threw a 14-yard touchdown to Juwaan Richard, which gave the Beavers a 31-7 lead.

WSC freshman Ethan Knudson kicked a 27-yard field goal with nine seconds left before halftime, which made it 31-10 Beavers at the end of the half.

Wildcat senior defensive back Cam Montgomery intercepted Jordan Hein for the second time of the game to start the second half. The interception resulted in a touchdown for the Wildcats on their first possession of the half, making the score 31-17.

On the ensuing drive, the Beavers retaliated with a touchdown of their own, courtesy of running back Tahi Nomane on a two-yard scamper. The Beavers led with 10:20 in the third quarter, ahead 38-17.

Nomane scored his second rushing touchdown of the game from three yards out. This was be the only scoring in the fourth quarter as the Beavers hung on to win 45-17.

Junior running back Rashad Tremble had 64 yards carrying on 16 attempts. Osborn completed 24 of 47 passes for 236 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Senior defensive back Cam Montgomery had a game-high ten tackles for the Wildcats, and became the fourth player in school history to have three interceptions in a single game.

“(Montgomery) was outstanding, but there were several others who played really well,” McLaughlin said. “The statistics were almost dead even in terms of first downs, total yards, and time of possession.”

“That’s something to build on. The defense is starting to come around and feeling good about themselves so that’s good.”
The Wildcats will be at home this Saturday against St. Cloud State. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
