Two major changes to campus were discussed Sept. 11 at the first Student Senate meeting of the year.

The first change discussed concerned Wildcat Wheels. This is a taxi cab service that provides a free and safe way for students to travel around town and deters driving while under the influence. The Senate is hoping to expand the nights of operations to Friday and Saturday.

Currently, Wildcat Wheels’ operation hours are 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Wednesdays and 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Thursdays. The extended hours will just be a trial run for the rest of the semester to see if having Wildcat Wheels available on the weekend will benefit the students and encourage them to stay in town on the weekends.

The office for Wildcat Wheels will also now be housed in the Campus Security building. Officials say the move will not affect Wildcat Wheels’ service in any way, and Campus Security will remain separate from Wildcat Wheels.

The other big change discussed was the installment of unisex bathrooms on the second floor of the Kanter Student Center. Last year P.R.I.D.E, the campus’ LGBQT group, started a petition to have unisex bathrooms installed. The petition got around 287 signatures, and the goal is to create a safe place for anyone to use the restroom.

A representative from P.R.I.D.E came to request the Student Senate’s support in the installment of unisex restrooms on the second floor of the Student Center.

P.R.I.D.E has asked for new signage, locks and possibly chairs. The chairs would be for breastfeeding moms to have a safe and quiet place to feed their child.

College officials present at the meeting mentioned that the college will support these efforts, and once signage comes in all single-user restrooms on campus will be made into unisex restrooms.

When the restrooms are installed they will be added to campus maps.

Student Senate’s next meeting will be held Sunday Sept. 25.
