Commercials Crush Conor

Conor McGregor, the current featherweight champion, tweeted last week that he would be retiring.

This came as a shock to everyone, because McGregor is only 27 and just a few months away from a rematch with Nate Diaz, who is the only person to beat McGregor in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

As soon as the tweet went out, everyone was speculating why he decided to retire. Some people thought he just didn’t want to fight again, because he had suffered his first loss.

Another, and far better reason, was that he was in attendance of a fight in Ireland where a young fighter lost his life. That would haunt any person, let alone a guy who has to go and do the same thing this kid was doing when he passed away.

Soon after, the UFC officially pulled McGregor from the UFC 200 fight card. Things were getting serious and no one had any answers as to why he decided to leave.

Dana White, UFC president, went on SportsCenter to clear the air and tell everyone why McGregor was pulled from the event.
White told the world he decided to pull McGregor from 200 because he had refused to come to Las Vegas and film the fight commercial and do some press. Every fighter is required to do these things before their fights. The only other time a fighter refused, White pulled them from the fight as well.

This seems like a very dumb reason for the current biggest draw in the company to say he is retiring. Basically, walking away from the sport you love and hold the championship for, because you wouldn’t film a 30-second commercial.

But then again, he has made millions of dollars and is set for life. He really doesn’t need to fight anymore.

I personally think he is trying to use his status as the biggest draw for the company to get out of doing things he doesn’t want to do. If White decides McGregor doesn’t have to do the commercial and press, every fighter is going to ask to not do them and White will be in a tough situation.

McGregor sent out another tweet on Monday saying he was back on the UFC 200 fight card. As of this writing, there still has been no official word from UFC, so who knows if he actually is. This has all been one big distraction that the UFC didn’t need. I don’t think it is that hard to do the things every other fighter has to do even if you are the biggest draw.
