M.R. Sellars brings knowledge to Willycon panels

Courtney Upah, Staff Writer

ITW (International Thriller Writers) member M.R. Sellars was the featured reader at Willycon XVIII over the weekend, and led 6 panels.

These panels ranged anywhere from book signings, to a question and answer session or the author talking about horrifying experiences he’s had touring and going to book signings.

Sellars is probably best known for the works from his Rowen Gant series like: “In The Bleak Near Winter,” “Harm None,” or “Never Burn a Witch.” He attended all three days of Willycon and held a panel each day, including 9 a.m. panels on both Saturday and Sunday.

As an author, Sellars writes in a mixed genre, with his Rowen Gant stories mostly being mash ups between suspense, thriller and horror. He mentioned that his work is kind of like “The Twilight Zone” meets “The X-Files” meets “The Outer Limits.”

“Largely I get my ideas from nightmares and what I see on T.V. They kind of blend together, then I get an idea and say ‘well what if I did this,’” Sellars said.

Sellars gave a great deal of information and advice on writing. He talked about the importance of promotion, editors and readers. He also mentioned that he worked from home and how it is sometimes hard to stay focused and write in that environment.

One story Sellars mentioned was about when he first got published, and the advanced unedited copy got printed instead of the edited version. However, around 2,000 copies of this unedited work got out before the publishing house noticed.

Today, Sellars has a multitude of books under his belt including his Rowan Gant Novels, some short stories and a novella.

“The next Rowen Gant book will come out next year some time, if I get it in on time,” Sellars said.
