WSC football comes back to a new field

The Wildcats are finally back outside for spring football, but only thanks to their new field turf. Without this, they would probably still be inside due to all the snow we got a few weeks back.

“The artificial surface has been awesome in allowing us to continue practice,” head coach Dan McLaughlin said. “The weather has had no effect on our practice schedule at all.”

The ‘Cats started up March 30 and had two days of practice without pads before suiting up all the way on Saturday.

With summer fast approaching, WSC’s 2016 football season is right around the corner.

Currently, there are 68 players suiting up and practicing this spring. The team and McLaughlin are eagerly waiting to evaluate the talent spread they have from the freshman class that will arrive in the fall.

Though it is tough to determine exactly how good the freshmen will be, McLaughlin is excited about the players they got.

The ‘Cats finished the 2015 season with a tough 4-7 record and only walked away with one win in the NSIC South.

“We were hampered last season by injuries and inexperience,” McLaughlin said. “I don’t foresee that happening to us again, and we are eagerly looking forward to a successful season.”

It is still far too early to tell who will be the Wildcats’ stars this year, but McLaughlin and his staff are impressed with their group of linebackers so far.

Even though it is only spring football, WSC will be getting after it six days a week. They practice Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:45 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. The ‘Cats are also in the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where they are getting in their lifting sessions at 7 p.m.

The Wildcats are very anxious to improve on last year’s season. With a good group of freshman coming in, and a fresh opportunity to start injury free, they are on to a good start.

The annual spring scrimmage will be held at Bob Cunningham Field Saturday, April 23, at 3 p.m.
