Nebraska native talks about her Peace Corps experience

Nebraska native Leah Travnicek visited Wayne State last Wednesday. Travnicek delivered a moving presentation over her time spent in Monapo, Mozambique, on a volunteer mission for the Peace Corps.

Travnicek was raised in Columbus and graduated in 2011 from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., with a major in biology. After graduation, she volunteered for the Peace Corps and served 27 months.

While in Monapo, she helped renovate a local school and taught English, chemistry and biology to the underprivileged students of the town. Her work paid off at the science fair as students made all types of creative science projects.

“It was a great to see the world,” Travnicek said.“From the moment we left to the moment we came back, there were no problems.”

She added that it takes patience and flexibility because it is hard work, but that it’s all worth it.

Her best memory was when she brought four kids to a beach who had never before seen one.

“For them to see the ocean was incredible,” she said.

Travnicek recommended that any student that wants to see the world and do some good should look into signing up. For information on the benefits and process of joining the Peace Corps, visit www.peacecorps.gov.
