Experience helps teachers excel

Pi Gamma Mu hosted alumna Stacy Johnson last Wednesday, when she talked about her teaching experience after college.

“Doing things for other people is what’s going to make you happy. The more you focus on others the better things will go for you. Be a good communicator, be selfless, be empathetic because it’s not all about you,” Johnson said.

Cookies were provided, and the room was nearly full for the presentation entitled, “Experiences—where life can take you.”

Johnson began by describing herself, then interacted with the audience asking everyone to come up with one word to describe him/herself.

Currently Johnson is working at Wayne Community Schools, but this is not the only place she has taught.

She talked about finding and changing jobs, as well as moving with kids.

A major topic she addressed was how, once time is gone, you can’t get it back. She explained that time spent being angry is time lost.

However, she also gave advice on looking for careers and how to communicate with people.

This involved looking for a career close to your major. For instance, Johnson had to start out substitute teaching instead of acquiring a full-time teaching position after graduation.

She also mentioned the importance of having the ability to work with others in your career.

However, she did mention how not everything is work, and that it’s good to find time to get involved in extracurricular groups or clubs.

“There were so many great experiences from WSC. I believe strongly in being involved in any campus activity that you could possibly be involved in, getting yourself out there and networking,” Johnson said.
