Man on the Street: Are you confident in your major?
As classes began a couple weeks ago, some students returned with high hopes, while others dreaded the classes they would have to attend. A lot of these emotions are reflected through your current major. People say you can always change your major if it isn’t for you, but what if you take the time to stop and think about where you are at with your interests? Is this really what I want to study, or should I consider moving onto a different subject?
To investigate, I decided to go out of my way to ask people a couple of questions. I asked them to introduce themselves as well as what their major is. I then asked them to consider their current major and how it is going for them. Are they enjoying their classes? Is there a struggle to keep up with their studies? Lastly, I asked if they ever considered switching their major and explain their thought process behind their answer.
Denise Hunt is a senior and is majoring in Elementary Educations.
She also has endorsements for Coaching as well as Reading & Writing.
She has been confident in her major since she first chose it. She has had good professors and always felt prepared and confident.
She says her experiences have allowed her to “see a lot of different things.” The work she has done has been worth it, since without background knowledge for education, you wouldn’t know how important the materials are.
Tyler Lucas is a junior and is majoring in Computer Information Systems. He is also a Resident Assistant at Neihardt Hall. When I asked if he was enjoying his major, he replied: “I feel pretty good about it. I’ve been enjoying it so far.” He hasn’t struggled much with his classes and never had the desire to switch majors, saying “I’ve always known I wanted to do something with computers.”
Morgan Czajkowsk is a senior and is majoring in Music Education & Flute Performance. She is enjoying the classes she is taking, and when asked about how she feels about her major, she said, “Stressed, but I love it.”
She was debating on choosing a Math or English Education major, but decided on Music and has stuck with it ever since.
Evelyn Murdoch is a sophomore and is majoring in Studio Arts. She previously majored in Early Childhood Education Inclusive.
She has enjoyed her new classes and has felt more interested in her Studio Arts classes compared to her old major.
While her new classes are more challenging and complex, she says they “give her a good challenge.”
Her main reason for switching majors was that she didn’t like the process of plannings lessons, let alone for younger children, so she decided to drop her major in favor of trying to learn animation and arts.
Most of the people I interviewed were set on their major, right off the bat during freshman year. Some say it depends on what classes you take or the people you meet that have similar interests to you. From what I viewed, each student was confident, and even though they might have found struggles in-between managing their classes with their major, they can overcome the problems they face and finish strong with their chosen major.
