The Student Organization Fair on Jan. 29 allowed students to display their clubs and organizations at Wayne State College .
“It gives the students an opportunity to see what engagement opportunities are available to them, such as how they can get involved in campus life, different organizations and different opportunities,” Amy White, the WSC director of student activities, said. The event recognized 46 clubs, giving students the chance to see what campus has to offer.
“I think it’s really important because it helps students get involved on campus, and it’s a good opportunity to network,” Sydney McKay, president of the WSC Legal Minds club, said.
“It’s also really great for clubs to participate in the club fair because it helps spread awareness about the clubs, especially for new clubs like our own,” McKay said. The clubs attending the Student Organization Fair are given the opportunity to extend their reach to more students on campus.
“The organizations and the student leaders from the organizations like to use this as a recruitment tool to help them recruit members,” White said. Events like this can guide students to find their passions, interests, and their place on campus.
“Our goal is always to help students to make connections, I want them to be connected, and whether that’s to multiple organizations or one in particular, we just hope that students find their fit here, on campus and part of our greater community,” White said.
Student-organized clubs have helped students gain important skills that they can use in the future.
“Overall, leadership is huge. They are gaining lots of leadership skills while they are a part of organizations. Event planning also comes with the organizations, just because they are doing events within their organizations, so lots of skills come with that as well,” White said. Having a variety of student-organized clubs on campus allows students to expand their fundamental skills while furthering their academics.
“I have learned a lot of communication, networking, leadership skills and getting creative with different fundraisers and activities,” McKay said. Students find their sense of belonging through events like club fairs by finding organizations they have interest in.
“This is something that we do twice a year, but what our office does is promote students being involved on campus. It’s important for students to be involved in campus life. That way, they want to stay, want to be here, and want to be a part of the community, and when students feel connected, it makes them want to do that,” White said.
Through the Student Organization Fairs every semester, students are given the chance to connect with clubs that match their interests and find where they fit in at WSC.
