The season has started for the WSC Curling Club, which has competed in its first tournament and hosted a car smash.

The Club lost its first competition 0-3 at Stevens Point, Wis. on Nov. 6-8 against tough competition.

WSC faced off against three teams losing to Michigan Tech 8-4, University of Minnesota 6-5 and 7-2 to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which is the reigning national champion.

The next tournament will be held in Rice Lake, Wis., on Dec. 4-6. This is the largest curling tournament in the country and multiple teams will be competing, including Minnesota, Green Bay, Oklahoma and Michigan Tech.

“I started this club at the end of the school year, two years ago so our first full year occurred last year,” Camron Groenke said. “No one on the team, me included, had curled before, so last year was rough as we were learning the game and honing our skills throughout the season.”

The team finished only half a point shy from nationals in Rochester, N.Y., last year.

This is the beginning of the curling club’s second year, and members are already seeing improvements. Overall, the team feels like it has improved in strategy, skill and communication.
Curling club also arranged a car smash this year creating more community involvement.

“We thought that it was just a fun way for the students to get out some late-school year frustrations and have a little fun in the process. It was a great time and helped support our club,” Groenke said.

The car smash was held on WSC campus during the volleyball’s black out night Nov. 10.

The car, called Ruby, was donated for this fundraiser after a good deal of use. About 30 to 40 students came by the car smash and participated.

The WSC Curling Club is just beginning the season and would like to see supporters as well as welcoming new players.

“It is an awesome opportunity to be involved in at Wayne State College. We are a sport club of course, so it is one of those things that you can compete in while in college, but also once you leave,” Groenke said.

Practice is held in Omaha at either the Ralston or Baxter arena every Sunday. To find out when the curling team competes, follow the Wayne State Curling Team on Facebook.
