A memorial service was held for former Wayne State College professor Sayre Andersen in Ley Theater on Saturday.

Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” played before the memorial began while a slideshow of pictures was shown commemorating this WSC professor of 30 years. The theater was nearly filled with friends, family and colleagues.

Sayre Andersen is survived by wife Bonnie, sons Eric and Seth, and step-daughter Chris Hagerbaumer, who all read at the memorial.

Sayre Andersen was remembered as a scholar, friend and philanthropist.

According to eulogists, Sayre made an impact on everyone he met and was remembered for his scholarly ambition as well as his kindness.

He would go out of his way to help others, offering hospitality or advice.

Aaron Copland’s “Farewell for the Common Man,” accompanied by a slide show, was played as the memorial concluded.

Anyone wishing to honor Sayre Andersen can donate to: Andersen-Vaughan Scholarship for English majors at Wayne State College, Humanities Nebraska, Nebraskans for Peace, U.S.- China Peoples Friendship Association or the American Lung Association.

Sayre Andersen passed away Aug. 24 at age 77 from cancer.
