Open auditions for ‘The Inspector General’

Zachery Halsey, Staff Writer

Another new semester has started at Wayne State College, and with that comes new opportunities. One opportunity for both new and returning students trying to find a place on campus is to audition for WSC’s production of “The Inspector General” by Nikolai Gogol.

“The Inspector General” is about a small town in Russia that is lorded over by corrupt and power hungry officials who overhear that an inspector is coming to the town.

This causes the corrupt officials to begin a mad dash to try to hide and cover up all their dirty dealings. When there are rumors of a suspicious character staying at the local inn, the officials believe it to be the inspector. However, the officials are unknowingly mistaken and mix the inspector up with an imaginative civil servant.

What continues on is what could only be referred to as an onslaught of comedy.

The location for the audition for the show is the Black Box Theatre (FA 003) in the basement of the Peterson Fine Arts building. Auditions will be held today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those auditioning should arrive by 4:15 p.m. at the latest.

If there is a conflict with these times, contact Dr. Gwen Jensen to set up an alternative audition time.

The audition will be an open call audition. Those minoring in theater or theater and speech concentration should bring a prepared one-minute comedic monologue.

Rehearsals will run Monday through Thursday every week from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. However, conflict with scheduling can be worked out until Nov. 9. At that time, rehearsals become a priority and conflicts need to be taken care of ahead of time.

There are 15 men’s and 4 women’s roles available. The show allows males characters to be played by women and women character to be played by men, if the cast type calls for this. Roles behind the scenes are available as well, if performing on stage isn’t appealing.

All students who plan on participating in the production, both onstage and behind the scenes, need to register for Theatre Workshop (CNA T320 -.5 credit hours). Stop by Jensen’s office in the fine arts building for information.

Performance dates and times are Thursday, Nov. 19, Friday Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 22.
