The WSC wrestling team faced extremely tough teams at both the Dakota Wesleyan and UNK opens, but the Wildcats were up for the challenge.

Led by senior All- American Jon Williams, (174 lbs) and junior Matthew DeGarmo, the ‘Cats showed that the 7-year-old program can wrestle with the best NAIA and NCAA II teams. DeGarmo was 2 seconds away from being in the semi’s at 197, giving up a late takedown.

Picking up wins for the Wildcats at the two opens were Patrick Donnelly, Devon Rupp, Spencer Trout, Garrett Toner, James Garcia and Jamison Baird.

“This early and tough mat time helps prepare the team for a long season, and ultimately, we’ll be ready for our Great Plains Conference tournament and the Nationals,” Coach Greg Vander Weil said.

Up next for the Wildcat wrestlers is the Buena Vista open this Saturday, then a Dual with Northwestern College at Orange City, Iowa, Dec. 9th.

Donations needed for WSC Wrestling Club

The WSC wrestling club needs 100 $50 donations from friends, family, and alumni.

The 2013 seniors lead the effort to send this year’s team to the NCWA Collegiate Duals Jan. 22-25 in Dalton, GA.

WSC Wrestling Alumni Allyn Gonsor, Eric Timmerman, Matthew Peter, Jon Mullen, Eric Held and Rob Peter have kicked in the first six $50 donations to send the Wrestling Wildcats to the mats in Georgia, leaving only 94 to go.

The WSC Wildcats have been selected as a top 20 team and are invited to the NCWA Dual event.

This honor comes with the cost of sending the team. We need airfare in order for the wrestlers to miss the least amount of class time.

Registration and lodging are covered!
