WSC volleyball NSIC tournament runner-up, qualifies for Regionals

The No. 7 Wayne State Wildcats won in a 3-2 set thriller in the semi-finals of the NSIC tournament against the No. 3 Concordia St.Paul last Friday in Duluth, Minn. The scores of the match were 25-27, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-13.

Katie Hughes had a career high in kills with 23, including 13 digs, giving her a double-double in the match, while Alyssa Frauendorfer had 12 kills and Elizabeth Gebhardt had 15 kills with 4 blocks in the match.

Michaela Mestl recorded a team-high 22 digs and Courtney VanGroningen added 17 more digs with Mestl.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats perfection ended last Saturday in a 0-3 set loss against the No. 2 team Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC Championship Tournament.

The scores of the match were 25-21, 25-15, and 25-10.

Mestl led the team in kills with 6, as Hughes, Frauendorfer and Alex Opperman added 5 kills each.

Gebhardt had four blocks and Leisa McClintock was credited with 23 assists. The Wildcats’ record is now 26-6 overall.

Wayne State is now in the NCAA Central Regional tournament in Duluth Minn., and will play on Thursday Nov. 20 against Central Missouri.
