The Wayne State College women’s intramural football team has been awarded the sportsmanship trophy from the national tournament in which they competed, January in Pensacola, Fla.

After going 6-0 in intramural contests at WSC, the team was chosen to compete at the regional tournament in Lincoln.

WSC won the regional tournament championship game in overtime to advance to nationals.

WSC was one of 14 teams to compete at the national tournament.

“We’re pretty fortunate that we can provide a girls’ intramural football team,” Jeff Zeiss, intramural sports adviser said. “Student senate was instrumental for funds for us to go to the tournament.”

WSC was one of the few small schools at both tournaments.

“We were one of the only non-DI schools at regionals and nationals,” team member Allison Baker said.

Intramural football plays seven players on the field for each team. The WSC championship team consisted of eleven players. The offense consists of three linemen, the quarterback, one running back and two receivers.

“We started out running the ball early in the season, but later in the year we became a passing team,” team captain Terri Molt said.

The regional tournament was played in the first week of November.

After that the team continued practicing every week for nationals until winter break.

“The best part was how close we became as friends,” Molt said. “I’m hoping more people will go out for intramurals now.”
