Casino Night took place in Frey Conferencer Suite on Feb. 21. The event gave students the chance to win prizes that ranged from gift cards to an Xbox One. A mechanical bull was a popular attraction, with over 90 students riding.

The annual Casino Night drew 312 students to the Frey Conference Suite in the Kanter Student Center on Feb. 21.

The event ran from 7 to 11 p.m. and about $350 in Cat Cash was given away, along with many prizes. A new attraction was a mechanical bull, which 91 students signed a waiver to ride.

“We tried a new system to move things along faster,” Kelley Robinson of the Student Senate said. “Normally we did prizes at the end. This year we gave out prizes throughout the night. That way people knew when which prizes would be given out. We’re looking for new ways to keep people from standing around.”

A number of Cat Cash gift cards were given out as prizes. One gift card was for $25 and another was $50. Ten $20 gift cards for the book store were given out. Other prizes were a Fit Bit, Play Station 4, 32’’ television and a Google Chromecast.

The two most popular prizes were an Xbox One, won by Anthony Tebbe, and a 50’’ television, won by Matt Melcher.

“We have about a $5,000 budget for prizes,” Robinson said. “We want to keep the prizes cool.”

Casino Night is one of the bigger events when it comes to student activities on campus. It is held once a year, usually during second semester, and has become a tradition at Wayne State.

“There were a lot of people, which was exciting,” Robinson said. “People know it’s fun and come check it out. It’s been a big deal ever since I’ve been here.”

Robinson said this was the senate’s only main event this year, but they are looking for new ones to add next year.
